As you all should know, hurricane Sandy did a real job here in NJ. We are 20 miles inland from the shore, and the damage was quite unbelievable even here.
We had some five large oaks blow down like bowling pins, one knocking the other over. The final one actually split the last oak in two.
We are talking 100-year plus old trees. This was not trivial stuff.
This is a picture of what used to be our path into the woods That is a four foot high fence door. Behind it now, is a 3 foot trunk.
We had to make a few adjustments, like a new path route, me actually reversing the gate to accommodate the situation -open to the left, rather than the right, reversing all manner of heavy duty hardware (engineer, crotchety curmudgeon, cheap, etc.), and off we were: merely walk around it.
The stump does look somewhat removable, but after spending some $12,000 so far, I was a tad reluctant to have the tree guys tackle this, the biggest one, if I could simply reroute the forest path around it.
Mother nature can be vicious.
