In my day, starting a car was an ordeal: press the pedal to tell the motor something, then turn the key and hope for the best, pumping the gas pedal as needed.
With big brother Buzz's Jaguar XKE it was even worse. As I recall, there was a thing you pulled out on the dash to prime the engine, and you closed your eyes and really, really had to wish the engine to start. It was a British car, after all.
Today, my new BMW is way less confusing, if somewhat scary. You get in, push the "start" button, and you're off. Except when you stop at the first red light, the engine shuts off. What the f%#ck? But it promptly restarts when you push on the accelerator to move on when the light turns green.
This is, frankly, mind boggling.
