I have often mentioned that I vacation in a small Maine fishing village. What I haven't mentioned is the cultural gap that is inherent in dealing with the good-hearted locals of said fishing village. Want some carpentry done? Steel yourself for the exact opposite of Mainers well-deserved reputation for being taciturn.
It's as if these people have found an outlet for conversation after being cut off from civilization during the very long winter and want to make up for it by fastening upon you.
Forget that you hired me for a job, let's have a good long chat instead, work being so boring and all. Say, why don't I magically appear just as you are sitting down for a meal or racing out on an errand so we can chat about stuff - maybe even the progress of your job. After all, here in Quaintville, we have nothing but time, and simply do not understand why you would think I'm imposing in any way on your scarce vacation time here.
And it's never a good thing when your plumber associated with the project says "boy, that carpenter is slow - he's always chatting me up and slowing me down!"
