Chatty Mainers

Since I grew up in the New York metropolitan region, it's not hard to understand why I became a curmudgeon. New Yorkers are not known for being easy-going.

It turns out that there are Mainers who actually test the limits of that NY style of shortness. They seem to be nice people, but conversations with them mostly consist of them replying to questions with "nope," "ayuh," and "could be." Frustratingly, they are pretty much the polar opposites of the chatty Mainers.

This style is fine when chit-chatting about the weather, but sort of falls short when you are trying to divine why the VW Thing stored over the winter isn't starting. Just like in Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper," VW Things ALWAYS start. So this sort of one-sided conversation can be mind numbing. You learn VERY QUICKLY how to slow down.

And lo, moments later, the Thing is running!
