I grew up with the computer world. Heck, my Electrical Engineering degree was NOT an "EE" it was in computer design. So, I knew a thing or two about computers.
When I was hired at Ma Bell, the piece of aluminum pictured was a memory card. Bell Labs best. Go ahead, count the little squares. Each is a 0 or a 1. 28 bit words. There's not a lot you can tell a computer in 28 bits, so we had lots of them.
Back to "gigabits." The phone in your pocket has at least 8. Big whoop, you may aver. Aver this: that is 8 BILLION bits. You're looking at 1028 in this photo. And theses guys ran your telephone system.
For the math challeged among you, let's go with that is nothing compared to your current phone. Your personal phone. Not the very complex central telephone office that did everything your phone asked it to do, and do it fast.
Small wonder abacabadabacaba was needed.
