Fate

In the mid 70s, when we at dear old Western Electric, a bastion of maledom that was without peer, the newly formed salesforce was 100% guys.

We had to have periodic training gatherings to see what was developing in the field and new technology and all manner of other boring blather.

The 100 or so of us were at just such a session when something more exciting than the sticking of ice cubes down the back of the person next to you occurred: one of us had just returned from a cigarette break or some such, returned to his seat, which happened to be near the front, leaned over and whispered something to his friend.

Stick with me here - the friend turned around, while the speaker droned on, so as is normal, heads turned around in a kind of ripple effect, rushing towards the back of the room.

There were women among us!  At the break, 100 guys surrounded these 3 women, who were recently hired product managers, pretty much the people who ran the business.

To my great regret, I didn't move fast enough, so I couldn't get through the throng.  Five years later, one was my wife.
