You've all heard this phrase - Maine has a VERY rocky coast and beaches are few and far between.
Our neck of the coast is classic rocky. Now, let me point out, I'm not talking about rocks strewn about thither and yon, I'm talking ledge - the solid stuff the glaciers carved.
Walking along these ledges is a daunting physical effort - careful footwork, highly variable balance and the tide threatening to cut you off.
Pah. Child's play. At the indestructible age of 12-14, ledge running was something to pass a nice afternoon. Yes, we ran light lightning along ledges made of one of the more unforgiving of nature's substances: granite.
In today's world, any kid doing this would have knee and elbow pads as well as a head doohickey.
We aren't curmudgeons because we wore knee pads, we are curmudgeons because we are, well, nuts.
