In revamping his stereo cabinet, the curmudgeon had to pull out a number of remotes that were lurking there. Actually a VERY LARGE number.
Marvels of engineering each, sleek, black (except for Apple), and 20 or 30,000 buttons on each one that the curmudgeon had had to learn (again, except for Apple - 3 buttons)
Enter the universal remote - the curmudgeon does not want to be thought of as cheap - merely financially careful, so off to Radio Shack, $30 dollars later, go to its web site and tell it which devices he wants controlled, and voila! We must be good.
Hah! Amongst the 20,000 buttons on each remote, there are very special ones that actually do a variety of obscure, but regrettably important, things.
The "Universal", carrying the weight of its own 20,000 buttons, doesn't catch these nuances.
So we still have all the remotes powered up and on standby.
